“Save the Haus!” You have probably seen the signs around New Orleans and wondered just what Haus needs saving. The campaign is geared towards saving the Deutsches Haus from being demolished in the new LSU/VA hospital construction. The hospital master plan is still in the planning stages so the building and organization might be spared, but only if the community lobbies Ray Nagin and friends.

I payed a visit to the Deutsches Haus last Friday for their annual Maifest (May Fest). It’s not supposed to be a low key family friendly Oktoberfest, but really that’s what it turned out to be. The event had a German string quartet, plenty of beer, wine, cakes, and traditional German food. Ten dollars (six and a half Euros) got you a plate of sour kraut, sweet red cabbage, wiener schnitzel, Wurst, sweet German potato salad, and bread. Cakes ranged from lemon to traditional German Chocolate. They also had Bitburger on tap which is always a bonus.

The event was a contrast to the loud and crowded Oktoberfest and allowed the guests to enjoy the food and music without the crowds. The Deutsches Haus also offers German conversation classes and socials, movie nights, and various other German and cultural events geared towards the local Germanophiles.

You can become a member of the Deutsches Haus for $50, which gets you into all the events for free and helps to keep the operations going. You don’t have to speak German or have German lineage to become a member. You just have to like oompa bands. A lot.
